The Spectator ' s £1,000 Schools Writing Competition As already announced, the

first prize of £500 in The Spectator's Schools Writing Competition has been won by Jon Margolis of Ilford, Essex. The cheque was presented to him at an informal ceremony this week by the Editor of The Spectator, .Mr George Gale (in the absence of Mrs Margaret Thatcher, Secretary of State for Education and Science, who had 'agreed to make the presentation but was detained at the last moment on ministerial business).

Margolis, it transpired, has previously won first prizes in competitions for young writers organised by the Observer; not surprisingly, he has his sights set on a journalistic career. Before that, however, he has his ' A ' levels to take, following which he intends to use some of his prize money on foreign travel. He is keen to visit China, and to spend some time in an Israeli kibbutz, before going up to university.

His present school, Bancroft's at Woodford Green, Essex, a Direct Grant school founded in 1737, receives the complementary award of books to the value of £250.

Runners-up prizes of £50 each and letters of congratulation have been despatched to Robin Gauldie of Dundee (Dundee High School); Jeremy'Griffiths of Moreton Merrell, Warwickshire (Leamington College); Leo Johnston of South Shields, County Durham (St Aidan's Grammar School, Sunderland); Nicola Kay Spanswick of Sidcup, Kent (Beaverwood School); and Christine Williams of London, NW9 (Alperton High School, Wembley).
