From Mrs H. B. Wilson
Sir: 1 wish to place on record as a Conservative, my utter rejection of the vitriolic views expressed in your current editorials concerning Mr Edward Heath, which subsequently has been given so much undeserved
Spectator March 16, 1974 publicity by the media in interviews with Mr Patrick Cosgrave.
I understand that he personally worked with the Tory leader in recent years, so that your statement that Mr Heath has spent nine and a half years trying to ruin the Conservative Party and three and a half years trying to ruin the country, which Mr Cosgrave endorses, certainly deserves an explanation by him.
Your opinions seem totally to ignore that at a time of great difficulty Mr Heath secured the largest percentage of the popular vote, and I can think of no man who has worked so hard and with such courage for the future of the country.
Your attack on him for constitutionally attempting to form an alliance.
with the Liberals is completely unworthy. The electorate certainly did not vote for the Socialist Government which unhappily is the result of this no decision election, and will soon come to realise the grave consequences which are likely to follow.
As Mr Cosgrave is boasting on
television of many letters of support, I hasten to send this letter of total opposition, and to emphasise my bitter resentment at this disgraceful and unjustified attack on the Tory leader.
