Sandhurst slandered
From Mr R.D. Vernon and others Sir: We, the undersigned, are all ex-warrant or non-commissioned officers formerly on the staff of the RMA Sandhurst.
We were most disturbed to read the letter from Mr Michael George (27 May) in which he alleged that the adjutant and Academy sergeant-major at the RMA behaved in a way grossly at variance with what we know, from our personal experience, to have been the manner in which they would have acted and spoken. The letter is extremely demean- ing to the reputations of two outstanding and honourable soldiers, to say nothing of the reputation of the RMA Sandhurst, an institution whose reputation must continue to remain above criticism.
We appreciate the fact that standards today have fallen, in the army as elsewhere, but the record must show that such language and such flouting of the Queen's Regula- tions simply did not occur at Sandhurst in the 1950s. It has not been possible to contact your original correspondent as he is not to be found at the email address which he gave. We feel that this opportunity has to be taken to correct an outrageous slur on outstanding individuals and what was a fine institution.
