Open City
NEXT weekend, a treat. Saturday and Sun- day are Open House Days, when the City's most splendid buildings will welcome us in. The Governor will open up the Bank of England. The civic City will show us Guild- hall and the Mansion House, the heralds their College of Arms, and the excisemen their classical Custom House, looking out across the Pool of London. Lutyens built the Midland Bank's palace in Poultry, which vies with 10 Trinity Square (by Edwin Cooper, for the Port of London Authority) and jars with 1 Lime Street (by Richard Rogers, for Lloyd's of London.) The panelling from Wren's town house seems to have found its way to the primary school of Sir John Cass's foundation in Aldgate. Details from London Open House on 09001 600 061. I hope that some of the bars will be open, too.
