No species of production or sale is so closely bound
up with the National Mark, which is a guarantee of quality very much stricter than prevails in any country in the world. This means that food stamped with the mark enjoys an "A.1 imprimatur." Its quality is and must be of the best. A vast majority of these canning factories are National Mark factories. It would be a pity if some very ignorant criticism of the mark enjoyed any vogue. Nothing would better serve both consumer and producer, not to mention distributor, than a wider knowledge of the stuff marketed under the mark. The public has been slow in this regard ; but, I think, sure. We are not a people who respond rapidly to novelties. Two years ago the sale of British canned fruit rose 250 per cent, in the twelve months and steady advance is pretty well assured. Even an export trade is beginning thanks at least as much to the superiority of the cans as the quality of the produce.
