Sir: Richard Acton advises that he was sur- prised that Evelyn Waugh drank beer for breakfast when in Rhodesia (Books, 19 September). I cannot imagine why: every- body in the four years that I spent in central Africa recognised that cold (Castle) lager was ideal for breakfast on a libt morning — and most mornings were that way. The drawback was that, as the meal progressed, one had to put down the crossword.
