Hitherto some local authorities have sanctioned Sunday cinema performances and
others have not. Presumably there will be a like dissimilarity of practice if this Bill should become law. As regards the money side of the performances, there is a provision that " such amounts as may be determined by the council to represent the profits " are to be paid to charities selected by the council. It is also provided that no person employed at a Sunday performance shall thereby be caused to work seven days in the week. The Bill seems reasonable. It would not be possible, we think, to go back upon cinema perform. ances on Sunday in those districts where there is a strong demand for them. Mr. Clynes will let the House of Commons vote as it pleases and points out that theatrical performances can be brought into the Bill by amend- ment. But that would be a very revolutionary change and we hope and believe that the general sense will be against it. Theatres involve much labour and are fairly to be distinguished from cinemas in this respect. * * * *
