THE PARISH COUNCIL
Sm,—I am• extremely glad that Mr.-Bates has drawn attention to our Parish Councils, and to the way in which their meetings are ignored by both the villagers and the residents. It is extraordinary how few people are alive to their importance. We are all ready and willing to blame the Council for their sins of omission and of commission, but we are too idle to attend even the annual meeting to find out what is being done, and to take some part in the running of our village. We have no one to blame except ourselves, but I think that it might be possible to give more publicity to the work of the Council. In this village I believe that only two of the "public " attended the annual meeting last year, but I am glad to report that this year ten people were there, most of whom took part in the dis- cussions. Unless we use our rights we shall lose them, and will deserve to lose them.—Your obedient servant, M. R. BENNIErr. The Shelling, Waltham St. Lawrence, Reading, Berks.
