ANGLO-SAXON OR CELT
Sta,—As a native of Ulster, I can regard with some detachment Colonel Burne's plea in your last issue for the use of " Englishman " as " a loose but convenient generic term for the inhabitants of this island." As a resident in Wales, I can imagine the Welsh reaction to his suggestion, and I feel sure that there would be no lack of protest from north of the Tweed. I would merely point out that our main authority for General Lloyd's life, Drummond's letter pre- fixed to the Political and Military Rhapsody, describes him as "a Welchman by birth, and said to be of a most respectable family." If Colonel Burne did not wish to burden his prose with the poetical " Briton," why did he not simply call General Lloyd " Welsh " ?- Yours faithfully, S. H. F. JOHNSTON.
