The first and second interim reports of the Committee on
National Expenditure, of which Sir Eric Geddes is chairman, were published on Friday, February 10th. The Committee had been asked to secure a reduction of £100,000,000, apart from a reduction of £75,000,000 effected by the departments, in the ordinary Supply Services, which must not exceed £428,000,000 next year as compared with £603,000,000 in the current year. In its first two reports the Committee proposed a reduction of £75,061,875 on services estimated to cost £390,000,000 ; it has yet to deal with the remaining services, excluding Ireland, which would cost £139,000,000.
