The Spanish Government has suddenly exiled the Duke and Duchess
de Montpensier, General Serrano, once a favourite at the Palace, and all the Generals of the Liberal Union party. The Generals have been sent to the Canaries, the Cape de Verde, and the Balearic Isles ; and the Princess and her husband were at first ordered to England, a destination changed at the eleventh hour for Lisbon. The motive assigned for these acts of violence is a plot, discovered through letters intercepted by the French police, to raise the Infanta to the throne. The plot seems to be generally disbelieved, the Duke de Montpensier having abstained markedly from politics ; but there is no doubt a ferment in Spain which affects some regiments in the army, and produces these spasmodic efforts at repression.
