GOOD NEWS and bad news from Light- atendoftunnel, formerly UK plc. Sir Ken- neth Clarke, ebullient co-chairman and finance director, says that everything is fine except the company's finances. The money is not coming in as fast as he expected, so he is having to borrow even more. In addi- tion, this year's accounts may have to include closure costs in the agriculture, fisheries and food division. Even so, says Sir Kenneth, there will be no retrenchment in Lightatendoftunnel's cash-intensive core activities, like health care. He still plans to bring its finances to break-even point, in the medium term or in the next millennium, and must in any case show some improve- ment if Lightatendoftunnel is to join the pan-European cartel of which he is the staunchest advocate. Commenting on these developments, his shadowy co-chairman Jean Force-Majeure blamed Lightatendof- tunnel's creditors for talking to the press.
