Sorry, Jeff

Sir: My apologies to Jeffrey Bernard for `bombarding him with unsolicited begging letters' (Low life, 27 April) and my thanks to him for his kind donation to Shelter. Mr Bernard is one of 100,000 supporters `I learned to read from my press cuttings.' throughout the country who either regular- ly give or make one-off donations. This is the lifeblood of Shelter, as most of our funding comes from these voluntary dona- tions. Without these we would be unable to help the thousands of homeless families who need our advice and advocacy.

As Mr Bernard woud prefer not to hear from us again, we will not be contacting him. Whilst grateful for his kind offer to donate his artificial leg, there are certain limits to what we would ask of our supporters!

More seriously, though, the Housing Bill is now passing through the Lords. This Bill will seriously weaken the rights of homeless families and we need the support of The Spectator's readers to ensure that those most in need have access to a permanent home.
