Turkey

Turkey is in a position to view the German menace mote calmly, but her people are enthusiastically pro-Ally and the Government prepared for anything. She has no illusions about Germany's method of endeavouring to isolate the victims and swallow them one by one, a method which. if not frustrated, would bring her soon to the doorstep of Asia. Hence her efforts to organise a Balkan bloc, and her own determination to stand by her associates of the Balkan Entente and to honour her treaty with Britain and France. The Turkish Press clearly exposes the devices of the totalitarian Powers in using their nationals disguised as tourists or business men for propaganda and espionage in peace-time and for sabotage when the attack begins. Germans are attempting to penetrate Turkey as they are penetrating the more exposed Balkan countries, but with less success. Two-weeks' permits for Germans to reside in Turkey are not renewed without good reasons, though the departing visitors are soon replaced by others. Turkey's calm resolution is a reassuring influence among the uneasy Balkan States and a deterrent to both Germany and Russia. And not far behind her are large, well-equipped Anglo- British armies in Syria and Palestine.
