Patriot games

From Mr Andrew Marr Sir: Just on the off-chance that a Spectator reader might take him seriously, I thought I'd better correct Andrew Neil's silly assertions (Diary, 12 August) about my views and book, The Day Britain Died. He suggests that I wish the destruction of Britain, that I hate, even `detest' the British and am a direct descen- dant of those who would have liked to see the Soviet Union succeed. As I say repeated- ly in the book, I am British to the core, want to see the place survive and would feel diminished if Britain disappeared.

Never mind. I don't suppose that Andrew Neil actually got round to reading the book; he seems to have been too busy posing as a minor Bond villain in the south of France. He does, I think, hate the Scots, but he hates the English too; indeed, he doesn't seem to be very keen on anybody except that crater-faced old paranoiac in the shav- ing-mirror. He makes much of having an `ingenious piece of screening software' that stops him taking unwanted calls from out- siders. It sounds suspiciously like a caller- display phone that you can pick up for a few quid on any high street; but if it really is ingenious, is there any chance St Tropez's babe-botherer could reverse it for a while?
