Sir: Mary Kenny's article in defence of Mrs Mary Whitehouse
is disconerambulatolial balderdash. The sum total of all premarital sex, fornication, adultery, incest, VD; abortions, and other forms of vice is an absolute constant. All that does change is society's attitude to it—or rather, those of society's attitudes to it which certain people claim to represent.
What is the 'permissive society ?' Define it! Precisely what does it 'permit'? The answer, of course, is that the 'permissive society' does not exist. It is a myth which is created, not only to draw more attention to those unfortunate youngsters who leave school, marry and breed far too prematurely, but indeed to encourage them so to do—to contrive all the attendant education, housing, unemployment, health and economic difficulties which are consequent on their belief in this myth.
Why? Either for political reasons or to propagate the puritanical prejudices of its perpetrators, or both. How does one become a member of the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association ? How many members does this organisation have? Exactly how many people's opinions does Mrs Whitehouse represent—and by what authority is she empowered to do so ?
Like Mary Kenny, she does not represent the views of anybody other than herself. If I had my way I would permit both of them to be publicly degraded !
