Sir: Talking of Monty telling fibs, can anyone throw light
on what he was actually after on 18 July 1944? This was 'Good- wood', in which three British armoured divisions were to burst out of the bridge- head, and make for Falaise, assisted by 2,000 bombers and 1,500 guns.
Everyone concerned knew that that was the aim, and a common belief was that we would then wheel left, and go belting up the coast; taking the ports, fulfilling Mon- ty's wish for a concentrated drive, and facing Ike with a fait accompli. In fact 'Goodwood' ground to a halt. The nearest that Monty came to admitting the failure was in saying in his memoirs: 'I was too exultant to the press during Good- wood.' A small confession indeed, prefac- ing his claim that the aim was to draw the German armour east and allow the Amer- icans to break out.

I have never believed this. Is there any evidence to support my suspicion?
