Our fight against terror
From Prince Turki Al-Faisal Sir: I think it is Mark Steyn who needs a 'reality check' ('Reality check', 5 June), He seems to think that the security forces in Saudi Arabia are just standing by and watching while terrorists do their worst, killing Saudis as well as Westerners, and trying to bring chaos and fear into our society. To my certain knowledge more than 1,000 people have been arrested and some 500 people have been held on suspicion of being involved in terrorist activities in the past year alone. Security in the Kingdom is now at an extremely high level, and the government and people of Saudi Arabia are united in their aim to rid our society of the evil of terrorism.
Steyn's ultimate conclusion — that Washington should be drawing up plans 'for securing the oil fields' of the Kingdom — is contemptible; a let's-take-theirmoney-and-run attitude. He obviously doesn't care what happens to Saudi Arabians and the greater Middle East at ail.
We are all people of the same world. We all live, love and die. One would have hoped that in a time of crisis members of the international community who value peace and stability as we do would work with us, not against us.
The world will only become a better place when we learn to understand one another rather than condemn each other for our differences.
