We suspect that the Brazilian Government begins to find the
conquest of Paraguay more than it can well manage. According to the latest telegrams the Brazilian ironclads were hemmed in in the Paraguay, unable to ascend or descend, while the army was hastily entrenching itself in presence of the Paraguayans, com- manded by Lopez himself. Should this army be compelled to retire the war must end, the vast empire already suffering severely from the strain, which has already compelled it to use slaves in the field.
