Sir: I am not surprised that the Bishop of St
Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane claims to be receiving letters about John Gummer from the spirit world (Letters, 25 July). My memories of him in St Andrews include the occasion when, in the middle of a service, he did a 'spontaneous' St Vitus's dance of hop, skip and jump around the church, dressed in cope and mitre, dragging some properly shamefaced and reluctant children with him. My rector's wife remarked next day that the Bishop was 'mad, quite mad'. I therefore have serious doubts that it is Archbishop Cranmer who has chosen the Bishop as an amanuensis for a celestial communication.
