Lude ludum " probably means " play at playing " or " play at being at school." No short phrase of classical Latin could include the light-heartedness, the chivalry, and the devotion to duty of the English. "Tionesta lude " might be tried as a make- shift, " honeete " not only being an appeal to one's self-respect, but suggesting that the rules of the game are kept.—I am, Sir, Sc.,
