Pouring oil on placid waters
Sir: I am glad that Mr Hepper (Letters, 24 Novem- ber) remembers my suggestion, many years ago, that the opportunity to vote against all candidates at an election would be easily secured by requiring that Mr X should be added to every list of candi- dates. At the time my proposal seemed to be regarded as a joke in rather poor taste. I was always quite serious, and I am now more certain than ever that a negative vote would be an advan- tage in more than one respect. How many votes, I wonder, are cast now not so much to get Mr A in as to keep Messrs B and C out? The possibility of genuine negative votes would, incidentally, en- courage political parties to select candidates who were of good repute. I hope that Mr X will be a candidate in every constituency at the next general election.
