A Contribution to an Essex Dialect Dictionary (Supplement iii.). By
the Rev. Edward Gepp. (Colchester : Benham. Is.)— Mr. Gepp has reprinted from the Essex Review a further instal- tient of his interesting and valuable studies of the Essex dialect. " He's got his beans in " is a new synonym for drunkenness. "Fay" or " fye " for to clear out (a ditch), " broach " for the doubled stick used in pinning thatch, " jag " for a cartload, are among the notable words. Mr. Gepp has found a large number of Essex words in American books like Uncle Remus and David Harum. Essex Puritans had a good deal to do with the settlement of New England.
