SKINFLINT'S CITY DIARY Wheel-less spin-off
Mr John Davies, Mr Heath's least jocose choice, has announced, as expected, Foulness as the third London airport, and if a third airport is really needed thank goodness for that. Let us hope that part of the spin-off will be the starting of a wheel-less hover monorail system to London as a showcase for what is possible in the near future rather than allowing British Rail to give us a gingered-up version of some Brunel and Stephenson system that they, no doubt, have still on the drawing board somewhere and see as a breakthrough.
Apart from this it is high time that who- ever pass as planners and futurists in the Civil Service make sure that provision is made on future motorway system layouts for including space for the pillars or pylons that may eventually be needed so that a monorail system may be superimposed on motorways with little difficulty.
