Sir: I offer my heartiest and most sincere congratulations to
your paper for the forthright, honest, realistic, courageous and logical articles which have dominated it in recent weeks.
Whether the topic be the Middle East, the EEC, Northern Ireland, the economy, law and order, or the member for .Wolverhampton South West, you have avoided the ,pussy footing stuffiness and mediocrity which have regrettably been the rule recently in the so-called' quality ' dailies.
It is refreshing that you recognise the predictable failure of the ' freeze — intrinsically as ineffective and socialist as Mr Wilson's. It is conforting indeed that your paper has been the sole champion of our sovereignty and independence, both economic and political. In view of our disastrous experiences in the great European conglomerate, it is frightening and ludicrous that only one weekly paper has the courage to face reality.
For me, however, your recognition of Mr Powell's qualities — integrity, bluntness, principle and courage — is the most gratifying factor. In my opinion, his realistic demand for increased taxation is final proof that he is by no means a populist, but a man determined to rescue his country from disaster, whether economic or social. To those who claim that his economic policies would render growth impossible, I say this: until inflation is halted, which universe/ price increases prove has not happened, growth will remain a dream, nothing but a useful tool for the present Government.
Your diagnosis of the' Liberal reviv al ' was truly excellent — although I consider myself a true Conservative. I also consider it in the interests of my party that it re-attunes itself to its true principles. To confirm the present Government is to seal the death warrant of true Conservatism, and to push the country further to the left, as Paul Johnson so ironically was correct in saying. That is why his grin broadens every day Mr Heath remains in office.
I recommend that your correspondent Mr Ivor Davies (' Voting Liberal ') reads Bernard Levin's column as often as possible in the Times. There he will
see laud loaded on to the lucky Liberals (lucky to collect so many protest votes, I mean) to such an embarrassing extent that a campaign to deify Dick Taveme would not surprise me.
