Terrorist attacks on civilians and residential areas were part of the Israeli landscape, with greater or lesser intensity, long before the 1967 'occupation'. Indeed, in the early 1950s there were literally hundreds of terrorist incursions from the West Bank (then Jordan) and Egypt, and perhaps dozens from Lebanon and Syria, that together resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths. The overwhelming majority of Israelis, including those from the Left, have not forgotten these murders, which is why, despite our uncertainty about its potential for long-term success, we support the current campaign.
