Hymns of Ter Steigen and Others. Translated by Frances Bevan.
Second Series. (Nisbet and Co.)—Here we have between seventy and eighty hymns, about a quarter of which are intended for the use of children. Many of them are drawn from a volume written in the thirteenth century by Mechtild of Stellfal (otherwise Magdeburg), and discovered in the con- vent library of Einsiedeln in 1861. We must frankly own that there is an extravagance of expression about these which does not please. But it would be out of place to criticise this eminently devotional verse. Readers who were interested in the first series, published a few years ago by Mrs. Bevan, will be- glad to have the new volume.
