Genteel gentleman

From Elizabeth Scott Sir: Having read Deborah Ross's interview with Sir Andrew Green, founder and chairman of Migration Watch ('Green's pleasant land'. 6 March), I hope she will go back to writing about restaurants where only those who have used a state school and the NHS can afford to eat. Did she know that Sir Andrew, as HM Ambassador to Syria, opened his door to the released hostages John McCarthy and Terry Waite? I am sure they did not heap scorn on him when asked, 'Would you care for a wash?'
