Good shepherdesses
From Susan Gledhill Sir: I was amused by Mary Wakefield's description of massed women priests at St Paul's Cathedral (Equal rites', 14 February). I suppose if one described any gaggle of headmasters, lawyers or politicians it could be equally amusing. We recently had a bishop who looked exactly like Arthur Askey.
It rather depends upon how one looks at the Church. The New Testament seems to say that it consists of all the people worldwide who sincerely wish to follow Christ. Its purpose is to do Christ's work in the world, and each person in it plays his part. The minister is to be the servant and enabler of everybody.
The Founder of the Church said to Peter (and through him to all of us), 'Feed my lambs . . feed my sheep.' Might it be that a woman, if she is humble enough, could do that?
