Pim's Number One
From Atjuna Kannangara Sir: You state that Pim Fortuyn disliked immigrants (Leading article, 7 February). This is absolutely untrue. His party, LPF, had a number of immigrants as members, including his deputy, a Cape Verdean by origin. Mr Fortuyn's anti-immigration stance was directed entirely at Muslims, particularly those from North Africa, who he felt were incapable of being assimilated into the highly evolved and much-vaunted liberal, social and political setting of Dutch society. This view was, and is, shared by a large majority of Dutch people, indigenous and non-indigenous alike, and one that has been adopted (albeit rather obliquely) by the present centre-Right coalition government in the Netherlands.
