Crane conundrum

Sir: Were he still alive, Hart Crane would be very surprised to discover he had written The Red Badge of Courage. (Isabel Colegate's review of Alan Judd's Ford Madox Ford biography, 16 June). Stephen Crane, obviously, would register still grea- ter surprise to learn he had not written it.

The question is left to be answered. Which Crane did Ford know?
