The petitions of the butchers of Paris, Lyons, and Strasburg, for a re- duction in the import-duly on foreign cattle were rejected by the Chamber of Deputies on Monday. This duty, suddenly raised in 1822 from 3 francs to 55 francs per head of oxen, under pretence of en- couraging agriculture, has failed to promote the extension of the do- mestic races. Hitherto the measure has produced uo other effect than that of placing butcher's meat, the most wholesome, nourishing, and substantial food, beyond the reach of the htbouving classes. Complaints of the price and quality of the butcher's meat brought to the Paris market are s,■ loud and so gemmd, however, that it is difficult to believe that the existing prohibitory import-ditties on cattle can be long maintained.
