Yankee victory
Sir: There is only one small error in Enoch Powell's stimulating article on Vietnam (14 November). The Americans have not lost the war in Vietnam—they have mon it.
The cost may have been too great. The victory may have come too -slowly. The Americans may lose the next round and they may lose the peace. It is arguable that the Americans have lost the uar as fought in Trafalgar Square. at the United Nations, in Paris, in Berkeley California, in parts of New York City, in Wolverhamp. ton, and even in Gower Street- but in South-East Asia it is the North Vietnamese Army which has been defeated not the American or South Vietnamese armies.
Surely there is enough trouble in the world for ourselves and our friends without making our enc• mies the gift of a victory that never happened.
