Helping Tibet

Sir: Your leader on Tibet (17 October) was very welcome. However, you are wrong to suggest that we can do little to help the unfortunate Tibetans. There is plenty that we can do. We can agitate for Tibet to be given observer status at the UN — an idea Which has already found favour with the US Congress. We can urge the Nobel award committees to consider His Holiness the Dalai Lama for the Peace Prize. Not least important, we can make charitable contributions. Tibetan culture, though horribly mauled in its homeland, thrives among the refugee communities of North India: but they need money for schools, libraries, temples and clinics. The Tibet Relief Fund, UK, will be glad to hear from any of your readers moved by the suffer- ings of this gentle, pious nation.
