Silenced prayer
Sir: In the last two months I have written a letter to four religious newspapers — the Church Times, the Methodist Recorder, the Catholic Herald and the Tablet — making the suggestion that prayers should be said at church services for the victims of persecution by noise. I believe the sugges- tion to be both important and interesting — as I pointed out in my letters, such victims are likely to be the most underpri- vileged in the population, being persons who for various reasons — mainly physical disability or poverty — are unable to move, either temporarily or permanently, to escape the nuisance.
None of the papers has printed the letter. What can be the explanation? Is it that the editors of the papers, and the church authorities, believe — quite wrong- ly — that the letter might be seen as criticising certain racial groups?
