No. 554: Freak-out

COMPETITION

Readers may have noticed our guide to festivals in Great Britain which we publish in this issue on page 695. A brief scan through it will reveal the not very surprising fact that a good many of the festivals have certain features in com- mon : most are predominantly musical; a con- siderable number offer fringe benefits in the shape of drama, poetry reading, art exhibitions; and certain names--e.g. Shirley-Quirk, Mar- riner, the Early Music Consort—crop up again and again. To liven the scene up a bit, competi- tors are invited to devise a programme (plus programme notes) for a totally novel kind of festival where public personages from vividly contrasting walks of life will be featured doing their own (or anybody else's) thing. Maximum 100 words. Entries, marked 'Competition No. 554,' by Friday, 6 June.
