In the Eastern theatre of the war great events still
hang in the balance. The Germans during the week have advanced rapidly in the direction of Riga, and are now fighting in the environs of Olai, which is only some fourteen miles from the city. Some twenty-five miles to the south-east they are engaged in an attempt to cut the Riga-Dvinsk railway, for apparently they have given up, for the time at any rate, their attempt to seize the town of Dvinsk. No doubt, if Riga falls, it will be a considerable loss to the Russians, but at any rate it will have cost the Germans very dear. In the South, General Ivanoff continues to press the Germans hard. On Monday the Russians achieved a considerable success on the Styr, and since then have carried by assault the town of Czartorysk, on the west bank of the river, where they took prisoners and guns.
