Later Lyrics. By T. B. Aldrich. (J. Lane.)—This is a
charm- ing little volume, containing about fifty pieces chosen from Mr. Aldrich's later volumes, — viz., "Mercedes," "The Sisters' Tragedy," "Wyndham Towers," and "Unguarded Gates." One brief specimen we must give ; it is an interesting contrast to Horace's wish,—
" neo turpem senectam degere nee either& carentem."
"A PETITION.
To spring belongs the violet, and the blown Spice of the roses let the summer own. Grant me this favour, Muse—all else withhold— That I may not write verse when I am old.
And yet I pray you, Muse, delay the time! Be not too ready to deny me rhym4; And when the hour strikes, a.. it must, dear Musl,
I beg you very gently break the news."
