The Moral Majority
Sir: Christopher Hitchens makes some pret- ty mean accusations against Jerry Falwell (26 June). The problem is that the accusa- tions are completely false. Mr Hitchens should have done a little more research before rushing into print. It was not JerrY Falwell who made the statement, 'God does not hear the prayers of the Jew', but in fact the Reverend Bailey Smith, a leader of the Southern Baptists, who is not even a member of the Moral Majority. This was the only anti-semitic remark made bY Reverend Smith, and he later apologised for it.
Mr Hitchens refers to 'Falwell's long record of anti-semitism'. What long record? Can Mr Hitchens tell us about it? The liberal media have long been opposed to Jerry Falwell and his Moral Majority., and if he had such a long record of ant!' semitism they would surely have exposed it a long time ago. If Mr Hitchens had done 3 little more research he would have found that Jerry Falwell has no record of any- semitism. I might add, strictly for the record, that I am not a member of the Moral MajoritY, nor even a Christian, but strongly opPose blame where no blame is due.
