The Italian situation, we are glad to say, has much
improved, and shows that even when it was at its worst on the eastern side of Lake Garda our optimism was well justified. Not only have the Italian flanks continued to hold, but the counter-attacks made by our Allies have been successful. There is now little reason to fear that the Austrians will be able to make further progress towards their main object—the obtaining of a foothold on the Venetian Plain. There is not much " kick " left in the Hapsburg Empire.
