The official announcement, which had been for some time anticipated,

was made on Wednesday that Mr. Herbert Gladstone had been appointed to the new Post of Governor- General of South Africa. Mr. Gladstone has been in Parlia- ment as one of the representatives of Leeds for nearly thirty years. He has held office in turn as a Lord of the Treasury, Financial Secretary to the War Office, Under-Secretary at the Home Office, and First Commissioner of Works. For six years he did his party good service in the position of Chief Whip ; and since 1906 he has been Home Secretary.
