CHARLES THE MARTYR

Sta,—Your reviewer Canon Charles Smyth, writing of the book Saints and Their Emblems in English Churches, deprecates the omission from a list of saints of the name of Charles I. Will he tell us when this monarch was canonised ?—or are we to understand that the execution of a ruler automatically confers sainthood on him ? If that be so, we ought to speak of Saint Mary Stuart, and should refer to a young girl on whose reluctant acceptance queenship was thrust, who for a few tragic days signed State documents as Jane the Queen, as Saint Jane Grey. It might be argued, in this last instance, that Lady Jane had not yet been anointed and crowned when she died ; but will that prevent her taking her place with Louis XVI in the hagiarchy ?—I am, Sir, your

obedient servant, JESSIE S. BOYD. The Midland Hotel, Skipton, Yorkshire.
