CHESS PROBLEMS
SIR.—In the Spectator of September 4 there is a mis- take in the chess problem: BLACK has a pawn on his first row, which is against the laws of the game; this does not actually make any difference to the prob- lem, unless it is meant to be something else (i.e. a Queen). But I also think there is another solution to this: (WiturE's move) Q x P ch and mate in one move.
1 ant afraid I am rather out of date as I am living out in the Congo, and we get all our magazines nearly a week late. I also hope that you do not find this letter too trivial.

[Our correspondent is correct: there was a mis- print in the September 4 chess problem, and it was put right with apologies the following week.— Editor, Spectator.]
