Our friends the French
From Mr Peter Hammett Sir: I was interested to see that Peter °borne writes (Diary, 12 April), 'Much less confidence . . . reposes in the officers. They are being made up by the French.' My father always told me that when he joined the British army in 1938 it was a common saying that the best army in the world would consist of British soldiers and French officers.
In more recent history, I remember that during the Falklands, despite the muchvaunted relationship between Mrs Thatcher and Mr Reagan, the diplomatic and material support from the Americans was distinctly hesitant, whereas the French provided immediate and complete diplomatic and technical support.
