Lavatory humour

Sir: Recalling last week's front-page photo- graph in the Times of the lavatory now seri- ously included as an exhibit in this year's Institute of Contemporary Arts show in London, together with the small blob of yellow paint by Damien Hirst published by the paper last month, we should note that both these manifestations of current aes- thetic genius were sold for £12,000 and £6,000 respectively.

Remember also two pictures hung upside down at this year's lamentable Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy because nobody there could tell which way up they should have been hung — as if it would have made any difference.

Do you not now think that it is high time, and happily appropriate, finally to pull the chain on these contemporary bad jokes?
