26 JULY 1997, Page 27

Sir: Your readers have now seen a wise conclusion to

the von Schlieffen correspon- dence in the letter from Robert Tombs (5 July); the very kind letter from Alice von Schlieffen in person (28 June); and now the suggestion from Nunc Willcox (19 July) that Ms von Schlieffen and I are the same person. It is difficult to think that anything else remains to be said, except that every scene in the human comedy must have its conclusion, and since the motto of the Gar- rick Club is 'All the world's a stage', it only remains for me to invite the distinguished participants in this correspondence to lunch with me at that very appropriate place. My guest of honour will naturally be Alice von Schlieffen and it would be convenient for my arrangements if she, and your other cor- respondents on this matter, could let me know on what dates in the first two weeks in August they might be available.
