English nationalism Sir: Although Peregrine Worsthorne deplores the break-up of

the United King- dom (`England don't arise!', 19 Septem- ber), I feel I should point out that the sec- ond paragraph in his article displays the sort of insensitive English arrogance which, by provoking irritation in moderate patriots and active dislike in nationalists, serves to fuel that which he seeks to quench. Eng- land did not stand alone in 1940, nor was it only England's finest hour.
