Mote and beam

Sir: You ran an article about the 'prurient obsession of the British press' by Vicki Woods (6 April). She included the quality press in her remarks, particularly the Inde- pendent, and said, `the mere word "sex" is exciting enough to warm the reader's blood and tug him towards a story he might not otherwise bother to read'.

Other articles in the same issue of the Spectator included the following words: sadism, masochistic, sex, mistress, bosomy, brothels, original sin, fuck you, whores, brothel, sexual anarchy, 'homo- sexuality', syphilis, Aids, homophile, kinky sexual obsession, perversion, bad at sex, sexual fetish, sex and science, sexual relations, sex, sensual appetite, beddable, `had', amorous, whore, a good spanking, bonking, accidentally exposed breast, bux- om, eunuch, castrato's manhood, effer, effin', `Anything for the weekend, sir?', and Eric Gill.

On page 23 there is a cartoon involving a pot and a kettle.
