Sir: Sir Denis Brogan (6 December) is shocked by the form 'Who do they trust?' But it isn't bad grammar. Certainly it is better than 'Whom . . . ?' which is not only prissy but ambiguous.
If be is interested I could send him a pamphlet entitled For 'Whom the Bell Tolls which might help him to adjust to the English of the post-Anglo-Saxon period.
