In the fighting in France, Mr. Austin lost both hie
legs while acting as Brigade Forward Observing Officer, and suffered other wounds, to his face,. arm and hands. Rochampton patched him up, and when he was serving as Assistant Adjutant at St. John's Wood Cadet School, he was.asked to go to France again to serve with the General Headquarters Staff under Sir Douglas Haig. He was appointed to General Birch's Artillery Staff, and later became a Staff Officer at G.H.Q. At the end of the War he went into residence at Cainbridge to graduate, in economics and foreign languages. Despite his disability he leads a very active life and has won motor races at Brooklands.
